Landing and securing a subsea cable at Mtunzini
A subsea cable had to be brought ashore and secured on the KZN North Coast, against hard deadlines and through the surf. Steff ran the boats, the logistics, the safety and the dive support.
Four things that could sink the job
Deadlines
The landing had to happen on schedule, with no room to slip.
Weather
Work at sea only happens when conditions allow, so every weather window counted.
Surf
Getting boats, divers and equipment through the surf zone safely, again and again.
Experience
Much of the team had little marine experience, so the job needed someone who could guide people in the water and keep them safe.
Precision on the water, control on the beach
Precision skippering
Handling boats in the surf and around the cable operation, where small mistakes are costly.
Safety
Guiding a largely inexperienced team and keeping everyone safe in the water and on the beach, start to finish.
Logistics
Getting the right boats, equipment and people in the right place at the right time.
Dive support
Supporting the dive work that securing a cable depends on.
On time.
Zero incidents.
